Section 2 Reading test

Read the text below and do the exercise on the right

A few minutes ago, walking back from lunch, I started to cross the street when I heard the sound of a coin dropping. It wasn't much but, as I turned, my eyes caught the heads of several other people turning too. A woman had dropped what appeared to be a dime.

The tinkling sound of a coin dropping on pavement is an attention-getter. It can be nothing more than a penny. Whatever the coin is, no one ignores the sound of it. It got me thinking about sounds again.

We are besieged by so many sounds that attract the most attention. People in New York City seldom turn to look when a fire engine, a police car or an ambulance comes screaming along the street.

When I'm in New York, I'm a New Yorker. I don't turn either. Like the natives. I hardly hear a siren there.

At home in my little town in Connecticut, it's different. The distant wail of a police car, an emergency vehicle or a fire siren brings me to my feet if I'm seated and brings me to the window if I'm in bed.

It's the quietest sounds that have most effect on us, not the loudest. In the middle of the night, I can hear a dripping tap a hundred yards away through three closed doors. I've been hearing little creaking noises and sounds which my imagination turns into footsteps in the middle of the night for twenty-five years in our house. How come I never hear those sounds in the daytime?

I'm quite clear in my mind what the good sounds are and what the bad sounds are.

I've turned against whistling, for instance. I used to think of it as the mark of a happy worker but lately I've been associating the whistler with a nervous person making compulsive noises.

The tapping, tapping, tapping of my typewriter as the keys hit the paper is a lovely sound to me. I often like the sound of what I write better than the looks of it.

Section 2 Reading test

Modern European and American artists were slow to discover native North American art , when compared with the relatively early interest which African objects had stimulated in cubist art circles. In this case , it was notably the emigre  European Surrealists such as Max Ernst who saw in native American art the sources of renewal and deeper vision that they held to be representative of the “ primeval “ world . These artists were especially attracted to the art of the northwest coast because it was largely literary , and their intuitive acceptance of these works was in many ways more broadly based than the anthropologists ‘ recognition of their particular aesthetic principles .

Other modern artists , such as American John Sloan , were responsible for the greater acceptance of native American painting in wider American art circles . By 1920 , Sloan had learned about the native painters of San Ildefonso and arranged an exhibition of their works at the Society of Independent Artists in New York . Other shows of modern Indian painting were organized during the next years . Finally , after a dramatic turn-around in Federal policy , a government- funded Indian Art School known as the Studio was opened in Santa Fe in 1932 . In the emerging Pan-Indian painting tradition nobody could fail to recognize art .

Gradual efforts to foster interest in the native American art increased . With the goal of stimulating the public’s interest, the Denver museum in 1925 exhibited for the first tome native American Art as works of art and not as anthropological specimens . Other milestones include an exhibition organized in 1939 for the Golden gate Exhibition in San Francisco , also known as the San Francisco   World’s Fair, and another one in 1941 at the Museum of modern Art in new York .

During the 40 s and 50 s, interest declined but early 60 s witnessed a major renaissance . Since then, the recognition of North American native art has become universal . Major shows, numerous art books, and journals have resulted from the revival of Indian art, but most of all the development of a market for tribal crafts, with prices proving them to be art, attest to the successful transformation.

Section 2 Reading test

Although most universities in the United States are on a semester system. Which offers classes in the fall and spring, some schools observe a quarter system comp-rised of fall, winter, spring and summer quarters of eleven weeks each beginning in September, January, and March: the summer quarter, June to August, is composed of shorter sessions of varying length.

There are several advantages and disadvantages to the quarter system, On the plus side, students who wish to complete their degrees in less than the customary four years may take advantage of the opportunity to study year round by enrolling in all four quarters. In addition, although most students begin their programs in the fall quarter, they may enter at the beginning of any of the other quarters. Finally, since the physical facilities are kept in operation year round, the resources are used efficiently to serve the greatest number of students. But there are several disadvantages as well. Many faculty complain that the eleven-week term is simply not long enough for them to cover the material required by most college sources. Students also find it difficult to complete the assignments in such a short period of time.

In order to combine the advantages of the quarter system with those of the semester system, some colleges and universities have instituted a three- term trimester system. In fourteen weeks, faculty and students have more time to cover materiel and finish course requirements, but the additional term provides more options for admission during the year and accelerates the degree programs for those students who wish to graduate early.

Section 2   Reading test

Long ago prehistoric man began to domesticate a number of wild plants and animals for his own use. After centuries of being nomadic, of moving from place to place in pursuit of game or of fresh supplies of plant food, humans were finally able to stay in one place and systematically exploit the seasonal resources of one locality. This not only provided more abundant food but also allowed more people to live on a smaller plot of ground. As a result, societies developed knowledge and experience about the world around them; our present-day pets, livestock, and food plants were taken from the wild and developed into the form we know today.

As centuries passed and human cultures evolved and blossomed, humans began to organize their knowledge of nature into the broad field of natural history. One aspect of early natural history concerned the use of plants for drugs and medicine. The early herbalists sometimes overworked their imaginations in this respect. For instance, it was widely believed that a plant or part of a plant that resembled an internal organ would cure ailments of that organ, Thus, an extract made from a heart- shaped leaf might be prescribed for a person suffering from heart problems. All early societies included individuals who learned to use plants for medicinal purposes. Salves, potions, and brews made from leaves, roots, and the fruits of plants were devised to cure illnesses , to heal wounds, to ward off depression, and even as birth-control measures for women. Often the early herbalists of a society guarded the knowledge of medicinal uses of plants for their select group. They became very powerful members of the early societies and were sometimes credited with magical or religious powers.

Nevertheless, the overall contributions of these early observes provided the rudiments of our present knowledge of drugs and their uses.

 Section 2  Reading test

Birds have some significant advantages over reptiles , including the ability to fly. They are endotherms, or homeotherms, also known as “ warm-blooded.” This has allowed them to live in a wide variety of environments. Unlike reptiles. Their bodies are covered with waterproof feathers that help conserve body heat. Water-proofing is provided by oil from a gland above the base of the tail. The birds preen by rubbing the oil into their feathers with beaks. Flight is made easier by their resistant to water loss than those of reptiles.

Seabirds are those birds that spend a significant part of their lives at sea . They nest on land but feed at least partially at sea and have webbed feet to aid them in the water. Seabirds descend from several different groups of land birds. As a results, they differ widely in their flying skills, feeding mechanism, and ability to live away from the land. Although comprising only about 3% of the estimated 8,600 species of birds, seabirds are distributed from pole to pole, and their impacts on marine life is significant. Most are predators of fish, squid, and bottom invertebrates, but some feed on plankton. They need a lot of food to supply the energy required to maintain their body temperatures.

The shape of a seabird’s beak is related to the kind of food it eats and the bird’s feeding style. Penguins have strong heavy beaks, a characteristic of seabirds that feed on fish and large plankton like krill. Penguins are the seabirds most fully adapted for life at sea. They are flightless, with wings modified into stubby” flippers” that come alive underwater. On land it is another story: they are clumsy and awkward. The tubenoses comprise a large group of seabirds with distinctive tube-like nostrils and heavy beaks that are usually curved at the tip. They spend months and even years on the open sea. In tubenoses such as petrels, the beak is relatively short, heavy, and hooked-an ideal shape for holding and tearing prey that are too big to be swallowed whole. Such a beak is best suited for shallow feeding because its size and shape interfere with fast pursuit underwater. Boobies, terns and other plunge divers have a straight and narrow beak for feeding on fish that are swallowed whole. Skimmers are the only birds with a lower part of the beak that is longer than the upper, which permits feeding while flying.
